A Dry Bland Oatmeal Raisin Cookie Story

in: family

My wife and I did some baking over the weekend and with two desserts on our wish list. The first of which is an old family favorite the home made oatmeal raisin cookies and a new recipe for a deep dish pumpkin cheesecake pie with a layer of chocolate chips in the middle to separate the cheesecake and the pumpkin. Well the first yummy treat to be cooked with the help of my daughter was going to be the oatmeal raisin cookies. As we gathered up the ingredients for our baking extravaganza we realized we were short some ingredients for the pumpkin cheesecake pie so my wife volunteered to run to the store for the missing ingredients and I decided to bake the cookies with my daughter in the interest of saving some time.

I will preface this by saying that I have baked and cooked plenty of things in my time so baking some cookies with my 5 year old is not a stretch or even something that has not already been done before. Anyway, the whole process was fun as usual we mixed “all” the ingredients laid out all the cookies of assorted sizes on the cookie sheets and popped them in the oven. All before my wife got back from the store. The batter tasted good and the cookies were cooked to a nice golden brown and done.

The leaning tower of cookiesOnce we cleaned up and got everything ready to make the pumpkin cheesecake pie, my wife pulled out the extra ingredients she purchased from the store and put them on the counter. Only then did I notice that now we had 2 bags of brown sugar one of which was about half gone. I thought that was certainly enough for this one pie as I asked why did you buy another bag of brown sugar? YEP! Oh right……. oatmeal raisin cookies have brown sugar in them. Ooopsie, I had forgotten to put the 1 cup of brown sugar into our freshly baked oatmeal raisin cookies  Needles to say as good as the oatmeal raisin cookies looked and smelled their taste was bland and a bit dry!

Anyway it looks like I will be the only one eating my dry bland oatmeal raisin cookies this week. The pumpkin cheesecake by the way was AWESOME! One parting thought about my baking mishap this past weekend. I was wondering if anyone had ever inadvertently made a mistake in a standard recipe only to discover a new twist that had become a “secret family recipe”? We won’t be keeping my dry bland oatmeal cookie recipe, in case you were wondering ;-)
