Prices are up for everything on the market today and that includes the foods we are eating. I like most people out there have taken a sizable hit in the wallet thanks to rising gas and food prices. One of the end results for all this extra money going out the door is looking for some creative ways to not only stretch the miles in my car but stretch out the amount of meals I get from my food. This was the idea for this post, to discuss one of the kitchen devices that we have that has surprisingly added some flavor to our home cooked meals and saved some money for us at the grocery store also.
The crock pot or some people call it the slow cooker. The crock pot is a great device that probably does not get enough credit for it’s versatility in the kitchen especially when it comes to saving you money on your groceries. How you may be wondering can the crock pot save you money? Let’s start with the most obvious money saver and that is the cut of meat that you would normally buy. The very purpose of the crock pot is to break down meats to make them juicy soft and easy to eat. I have found that for meats you don’t need to purchase that prime piece of meat to get a delicious meal. You would be wise to cut back on the level of meats you are buying and with a little play in your recipe you can cook up an outstanding meal for less money and most times a bigger meal as well. So get that cheaper meat and get more of it because leftovers rock too
Consider the cooking process for a crock pot as well, just set it and forget it. Leave for work and come home to a house that is filled with aromas that will not only please your senses but can relieve the stress of having to cook dinner after a long day from work. Another money saver the crock put provides to us won’t apply to everyone but for us our oven is fueled by gas so a little crock pot drawing off a 110 volt plug for a few hours for meals that can last a few days is well worth it.
I won’t bother going into all the recipes that you can throw together for a crock pot as that was not the intention of this post. I think we have all seen the cookbooks out there showing you recipes to cook full meals with only 5 ingredients and sometimes less. My only recommendation here is for those of you that don’t have a crock pot and are looking for ways to save money, you might want to consider your very first crock pot.
